Akebia quinata 'Silver Bells' is a fast-growing, evergreen climber with decorative leaves composed of 5 leathery, light green leaves. This variety is attractive not only for its vigorous growth, but also for the unique fragrant flowers that appear in May.
The male flowers are white with purple-pink stamens, while the female flowers have a purple-pink tint with a dark brown pistil. This combination of colours makes the flowers not only a visually interesting feature but also a source of a delicate, sweet scent that attracts pollinators. In addition, 'Silver Bells' is an excellent pollinator for other acacia cultivars, encouraging a bountiful crop of fruit.
After flowering, unusual sausage-shaped fruits appear on the plant, ripening in autumn, September to October. The fruits have an edible, sweet flesh, and when fully ripe they naturally open to reveal their inner contents.
The stems wrap around supports, making the plant ideal for growing near fences, pergolas, arbours or gates. It can also be left to climb freely up trees, creating a natural, woodland effect.
With its exotic beauty, fast growth and low maintenance, Akebia quinata 'Silver Bells' is a great choice for anyone wanting to bring an interesting and unusual climbing plant into their garden.
