Akebia quinata 'Variegata' is a fast-growing, semi-deciduous climber, distinguished from other varieties by its decorative similarly shaped leaves. Each leaf is composed of 5 leathery, dark green petals that are irregularly mottled with white spots. This effect is most pronounced when the plant is planted in full sun.
In May it blooms with delicate, pale pink fragrant flowers that give the plant an elegant appearance. Akebia quinata 'Variegata' is not only beautiful, but also makes an excellent pollinator for other Akebia cultivars, increasing their ability to fruit.
After flowering, the plant produces unusual sausage-shaped fruits that ripen in autumn, from September to October. Their flesh is edible and sweet, and they open naturally when fully ripe.
This vigorous climbing liana grows up to 8-10 metres tall, with its stems wrapping around the supports. It is ideal for planting along fences, pergolas, gates and arbours. It can also be left to climb freely in the trees, creating a natural, woodland effect.
With similar leaves, fast growth and easy care, Akebia quinata 'Variegata' is an exceptional choice for anyone looking for a striking, decorative and useful climbing plant.
