The 'Gloster' apple tree is a winter variety originally from Germany. It is one of the most widespread varieties grown in temperate climates, appreciated for its high quality of fruit and good storability.

The size of the apples is medium to large, the shape typically conical to slightly bell-shaped.

The basic colour is light green, with a distinct covering of dark purplish red, which may make up almost 100 % of the surface. A fine waxy coating is typical.

The flesh is light green to cream, juicy, tender, with a harmonious combination of sweetness and mild acidity. The flesh is very aromatic.

The flavour is balanced, slightly spicy, with a rich aromatic profile.

Ripening begins in late September to early October.

The fruit reaches maturity in December. If stored properly (0-4 °C), they will last until March. Excellent, the variety is less susceptible to storage diseases.

The growth of the tree is medium vigorous, suitable for lower and vigorous shapes such as necks and quarter trunks. Trees on the M26 rootstock enter fruiting quickly, bearing regularly and profusely. The root system of M26 is sufficiently branched and frost resistant, but requires support in the early years of cultivation.  It requires deep, nutrient-rich soils with sufficient irrigation and a sunny site.

Responds well to shaping and maintenance pruning. It is advisable to maintain a light-coloured canopy to improve fruit quality.

The variety is partially self-pollinating, but yields better in the presence of suitable pollinators such as 'Idared' or 'Golden Delicious'.

Disease resistance: 'Gloster' is moderately resistant to apple downy mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) but susceptible to apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). It is therefore advisable to take preventive measures such as proper fertilisation and protection with chemical products.

The variety 'Gloster' is popular in commercial plantings because of its excellent shelf life and attractive fruit appearance. On the M26 rootstock it is particularly suitable for intensive orchards with precise management.

This pomological description summarises the key characteristics and recommendations for growing this popular variety under Central European conditions.
