The 'Granny Smith' apple tree is known for its light green fruit with a distinctive sour flavour. This variety originated in Australia, where it was discovered in 1868 by Mary Ann Smith. Its distinctive flavour and long shelf life make it one of the most popular varieties worldwide.
Granny Smith' fruits are medium sized, spherical to slightly conical in shape. Their light green skin is smooth and may take on a slight yellowish tinge when fully ripe. The flesh is white to creamy, firm, juicy and very crisp. The flavour is refreshing and strongly acidic, which makes them suitable not only for direct consumption but also for culinary use, for example in cakes or salads.
The variety ripens late, usually in November. The fruit reaches maturity from January and can be stored until April, retaining its firmness and flavour. Its excellent storability makes it particularly attractive in commercial plantings.
The 'Granny Smith' trees on M26 rootstock grow moderately vigorously, reaching a height of approximately 2,4-3,6 metres. This rootstock ensures early fruiting and high, regular yields. However, the root system requires well-drained soil and the young trees need support.
This variety prefers warm and sunny locations, while ripening may be problematic in colder areas. 'Granny Smith' is partly self-pollinating, but yields will be greatly improved in the presence of other apple varieties. It has moderate resistance to common diseases, so preventive protection is recommended.
The 'Granny Smith' apple tree on the M26 rootstock is an ideal choice for growers looking for a medium-sized tree with a high quality and abundant crop. Its fruit is well suited for long term storage, direct consumption and a variety of culinary uses. In warmer regions and with proper care, it produces reliable results and high grower satisfaction.
