The 'Mutsu' apple tree, also known as 'Crispin', is a Japanese variety bred in 1930 by crossing 'Golden Delicious' and 'Indo'. It is one of the most popular varieties due to its large fruit, excellent flavour and versatility.
Mutsu' fruits are large to very large, often weighing 250-350 grams, with a spherical-conical shape. The skin is green in colour, turning to yellow-green when fully ripe, and a fine red cheek may appear on the sunny side. The flesh is creamy white, firm, juicy and crisp, with a balanced sweet and sour flavour and a delicate aroma reminiscent of 'Golden Delicious'. The fruit is versatile - suitable for direct consumption, baking, cooking and juicing.
Ripening occurs in late October to early November. They reach ripeness after 4-6 weeks of storage, when their flavour develops optimally. Under the right conditions, the fruit can be stored until March, making it a variety with excellent shelf life.
The 'Mutsu' tree grows moderately to vigorously and produces a spreading, well-leaved crown. Flowering is moderately late and the flowers are resistant to late frosts. The trees bear early and produce high and regular crops. Suitable pollinators include varieties such as 'Golden Delicious', 'Idared', 'Gala' or 'Elstar'.
On the M26 rootstock, which is semi-dwarf, the tree reaches a height of 2,5-3,5 metres. This rootstock encourages early fruiting and high yields, but requires support during the first years of growth. Trees on M26 prefer well-drained, fertile soils and sunny sites, and are sensitive to excessive moisture.
The 'Mutsu' apple tree on M26 is an excellent choice for growers looking for a variety with large, tasty fruit and compact growth. It is suitable for both intensive orchards and smaller gardens where it will excel with its excellent quality and versatility.
