The 'Topaz' apple tree is a variety bred in the Czech Republic, which is characterised by its high resistance to scab and the excellent flavour of the fruit. This variety is popular among growers for its reliability and versatile use of the fruit.
Topaz' fruits are medium to large, spherical to slightly flattened. The skin is yellow and covered with an orange-red cheek. The flesh is light, firm, juicy, with a balanced sweet and sour flavour and a strong aroma. The fruit ripens in late September to early October and is best eaten after a short period of storage. Under the right storage conditions, they will last until March, retaining their flavour and texture.
The 'Topaz' tree grows moderately vigorously and forms a compact, well-branched crown, which makes it well suited for intensive cultivation. The trees have an early onset of fruiting and produce regular and abundant crops. The variety is highly resistant to scab (Venturiaaequalis) and moderately resistant to powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha), making it attractive for organic cultivation.
On rootstock M26 it is approximately 2.5-3.5 metres tall. M26 is a semi-dwarf rootstock which encourages early fruiting and ensures a regular crop.
A sunny position with fertile and permeable soil is recommended for successful cultivation. 'Topaz' is an alien pollinator and planting close to suitable pollinators such as 'Golden Delicious', 'Idared' or 'James Grieve' is recommended. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and a good quality crop, and shaping into an open canopy for better light is recommended.
The 'Topaz' apple tree is an attractive variety with exceptional flavour and high disease resistance, ideal for gardeners and fruit growers looking for a reliable, high quality crop.
