The 'Flamenco' apple tree, also known as 'Ballerina Obelisk', is a columnar variety bred in the UK. This variety is the result of crossing 'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Court Pendu Plat' with 'Wijcik McIntosh', giving it compact growth and good quality fruit.
The fruit of 'Flamenco' is medium sized, round to slightly flattened. The skin has a green base, with most of the surface covered with an attractive red cheek on the sunny side. The flesh is white, crisp, juicy and has a balanced sweet and sour flavour. The fruit ripens in mid-autumn, belongs to the mid-season and can be stored for several weeks.
The tree is columnar, compact and has minimal branching. The fruits form on short shoots along the main stem, making this variety ideal for small gardens or container growing. On the M26 rootstock, the tree reaches a height of about 3 metres and a width of about 1 metre. This rootstock encourages early fruiting and ensures a regular harvest.
A sunny site with deep, fertile and permeable soil is recommended for successful cultivation. 'Flamenco' is an alien pollinator and therefore the presence of other apple varieties flowering at the same time is necessary to ensure a good crop. Pruning is minimal, just remove damaged or diseased shoots and maintain the columnar shape of the tree.
The 'Flamenco' apple tree is ideal for small gardens, patios or container growing. Its compact, columnar growth habit and quality fruit make it an attractive choice for growers looking for a reliable and aesthetically pleasing variety.
