The Amber raspberry is a recurrent fruiting variety that starts fruiting in the first week of August and takes 3-4 months to produce, making it an extremely profitable variety.
The fruits are large to very large, firm and round in shape with a glossy surface. They are yellow at the beginning of ripening, but the longer they remain on the bush, the more their colour changes to orange. During ripening, the sugar content increases, making the raspberries extremely sweet and tasty.
Amber raspberries are very resistant to disease and do not require special protection. The plant grows to a height of about 1,5 m and produces several sturdy shoots. The shoots are light green and covered with small thorns, which do not hinder convenient harvesting.
It thrives best in a sunny and sheltered position. The raspberry is sensitive to severe frosts and spring frosts which can damage the buds, so it should be grown on the leeward side of the garden or in sheltered areas.
The soil should be rich in nutrients but well drained to avoid water build-up which can lead to root rot.
The Amber raspberry is one of the autumn varieties which bear fruit on shoots in the same year. It is therefore advisable to prune the shoots very late in autumn, after fruiting has finished.
The shoots are cut at ground level, which encourages the growth of new shoots the following year. This practice:
Increases yield
Minimises the risk of disease transmission
If the shoots are not cut, a new crop may appear the following year, but it would be very weak and therefore this practice is not recommended.
The Amber raspberry is a high-yielding variety which is distinguished by its long fruiting period, sweet taste and disease resistance. Its yellow-orange colour makes it one of the most attractive raspberry varieties, suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. Its easy care and regular harvest make it a suitable choice for both domestic and commercial cultivation.
