The 'Koszycki' royal walnut (Juglans regia) is one of the popular varieties of the 'Jacky Sandomierske' group, which is known for its large fruit size and versatility. This Polish variety is widely used due to its high quality fruit and good adaptation to different growing conditions.
Koszycki' has large, oval-shaped fruits with a high proportion of kernels. The shell is medium-thick and peels easily, which facilitates processing. The kernel is originally a light straw colour, which gradually turns chocolate brown during storage. The flavour of the kernel is excellent, making it suitable for direct consumption and processing. A high proportion of the kernel is made up of a large number of halves, similar to the 'Resovia', 'Dodo' and 'Alfa' varieties. The fruit ripens at the end of September and is ideal for early sale or consumption.
The tree has a vigorous, moderate growth habit and forms a spherical crown. It produces a mixed fruit type, with fruit forming on the apical buds and on the thicker shoots. The tree begins to bear fruit in the 3rd-4th year after planting. Flowering is early, with buds on the lateral shoots flowering later than those on the apical shoots. With age, fertility gradually decreases in proportion to the volume of leaf mass.
Advantages:
Early ripening: the fruit ripens quickly and the tree finishes vegetation earlier, reducing the risk of frost damage.
High proportion of kernel: Under optimum conditions, the proportion of kernel reaches up to 50 %.
Frost resistance: No significant damage has been observed after frosts of -30 °C.
Disadvantages:
Susceptibility to spring frosts: Early onset of vegetation can cause instability of fertility.
Dependence on soil conditions: Lower productivity on heavy soils, but better results on light, permeable soils.
The 'Koszycki' walnut is an alien pollinator, with 'Lake', 'Broadview', 'Krasicki Sobuś' and others recommended as suitable pollinators.
The variety prefers a sunny site and well-drained soils with a lower clay content. When growing in less than ideal conditions, it is recommended to minimise the use of nitrogen fertilisers, which can increase susceptibility to bacterial diseases.
The 'Koszycki' walnut is an excellent choice for growers looking for a large-fruited variety with excellent flavour and versatility. Its early ripening, quality fruit and ability to adapt to different conditions make it one of the most valuable varieties within the 'Jacky Sandomierske' group.
