The Royal Walnut 'MARKOWSKI SWEET' (Juglans regia) is a unique variety. This variety belongs to the 'Jacky Sandomierske' group, known for its large fruit and excellent flavour.
The fruits of 'MARKOWSKI SWEET' are large to very large, oval in shape. The shell is thin and easy to peel, which makes it suitable for children. The kernel is light, sweet, with almost no tannins in the skin, eliminating the need to remove the skin. The flavour of the kernel is rich and retains its characteristics for a long time, whether fresh or dried. The fruit ripens between late September and early October and is ideal for eating 'wet', i.e. shortly after harvesting, but is also suitable for drying.
The tree has dynamic growth and produces a broad crown. It is also suitable for poorer soils due to its high adaptability. The first fruits appear in the second year after planting, with mature trees (7-8 years old) regularly producing also from lateral buds. The tree starts growing later, which reduces the risk of damage from spring frosts.
The variety is protogynous, which means that female flowers bloom earlier than male flowers. A pollinator is needed in plantations, but in individual plantings it can secure pollination from the surrounding population.
Advantages:
Exceptionally sweet core with no tannins.
Large fruit, ideal for eating fresh.
Good adaptation to poorer quality soils.
Frost resistance due to delayed onset of vegetation.
Disadvantages:
Susceptibility of young trees to bacterial blight, which decreases with age.
Low nut density after drying, which is typical of the 'Jacky' group.
Variable kernel fullness, influenced by seasonal conditions - in years with abundant rainfall, the fruit is better filled.
The variety requires a sunny and sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Care includes limiting nitrogen application to minimise the risk of bacterial infections.
'MARKOWSKI SWEET' is an exceptional variety for growers looking for nuts with excellent flavour and large fruits. It is ideal for direct consumption, excels in the group of large-fruited varieties and its characteristics will appeal to any nut lover.
